What to check before booking a connecting flight

First establish whether the entire journey is on one ticket or combines separate bookings. Using the same airline does not prove that all segments were purchased under one contract.

Compare airport codes and terminals. Changing airports within one city may require collecting baggage, ground transport and checking in again. Matching city names is not enough.

British Airways explains that separate tickets are separate contracts. Do not assume automatic baggage transfer or the same assistance if a disruption affects the next flight. This is one airline’s example; check the conditions of your particular itinerary. Official source.

Before buying, check where baggage is checked through to, whether you must check in again, any overnight stop, transport between airports and the transit or entry requirements that apply to your documents. There is no universally safe connection time for every traveller and itinerary.
