Sofia

Discover Sofia through Serdica’s ruins, Orthodox churches, neighbourhood food and a separately planned Vitosha outing.

About Sofia

Sofia is Bulgaria’s capital, with archaeological remains in its centre and Vitosha as a possible mountain outing. Start with the Serdica and Largo area, then plan Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Saint Sofia Church as another part of the walk; they are not all on one square. Vitosha Boulevard and the National Palace of Culture area offer a different route for cafés and city life.

Boyana Church deserves a separate visit on the city’s southern side. Check its visitor limits and opening times before arranging transport. The National History Museum can be combined according to your interests, but do not assume every museum is next door or included in one ticket. Rila Monastery is a separate excursion outside Sofia, with its own journey and return arrangements.

A suggested three-day break gives one day to the historic centre, one to Boyana and a museum, and one flexible day for a neighbourhood walk or an excursion. Vitosha should depend on the current forecast, access and lift operation. A city hotel does not guarantee convenient skiing, and snow or a working lift cannot be promised by calendar month.

Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. Do not budget from an old lev-denominated guide; compare current euro prices and your bank’s conversion fees. Check accommodation per room separately from transport and admissions per person. No claim that Sofia is the cheapest EU capital or universally cheaper than Tbilisi is needed to choose a worthwhile trip.

Before buying flights, check the passport and transit requirements for your itinerary. Compare the final fare with baggage and hotel transfers included. If you plan a wider Balkan trip, verify each border and onward booking separately rather than assuming one entry permission covers every country.

Food and Drink

Try shopska salad, tarator, kavarma and banitsa. Ask about dairy, meat and allergens, and compare current menus rather than a guaranteed low price. Vitosha Boulevard, the central neighbourhoods and local markets offer different meal options.

Getting Around

Use the current metro and city transport map to plan your hotel connection. Confirm your airport terminal and any transfer to the metro station. Check ticket validation and payment rules with the operator rather than relying on old lev fares or fixed journey times. For Boyana, Vitosha or Rila, plan the return journey separately.

Flying from Georgia

Search flights from Georgia on your dates and compare the operating airline, airports, total time, baggage and final fare. If using separate flights or a ferry, check transfers and missed-connection conditions. Georgian ordinary biometric passport holders should check eligible Schengen short-stay rules, including the shared 90-in-180-day limit; special passport categories and other purposes differ. FlyGE does not sell Wizz Air tickets. For a specific available offer, contact us in chat or by phone.
