О стране Greece
Greece is the southern tip of the Balkans and the cradle of Western political and philosophical thought, with a coastline of more than six thousand islands stretching across the Aegean and Ionian seas. For Georgian travelers it has a particular pull because of shared Orthodox Christian heritage: the monasteries of Meteora, the Greek monastic republic on Mount Athos and the patron-saint icons in Thessaloniki all carry the same liturgical thread that runs through churches in Tbilisi and Kutaisi.
Athens and Thessaloniki anchor the mainland. In Athens, the Acropolis with the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora and the Plaka district sit within walking distance, and Cape Sounion with the Temple of Poseidon is a short drive south. Thessaloniki, in the north, is the natural overnight stop on the road from Georgia via Turkey, with the White Tower, the Rotunda and a strong street-food scene around Ladadika. For islands, Santorini and Mykonos are the postcard Cyclades with their white-and-blue villages and caldera sunsets, Crete is the largest island with Knossos and the Samaria gorge, and Rhodes and Corfu offer medieval old towns. Meteora in central Greece has the cliff-top monasteries listed by UNESCO.
The best windows are April to June and September to October, when temperatures sit between 20 and 28 degrees and the islands are open but not overcrowded. July and August are hot and very busy on the popular islands, while winter is mild on the mainland but most island ferries reduce to skeleton schedules.
The currency is the euro (EUR). Greek is the language, but English is widely spoken in tourism and many menus also appear in Cyrillic for Russian and Bulgarian visitors. Ferries between islands run from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio on the mainland: Blue Star, Hellenic Seaways and SeaJets are the main operators. Within Athens, the metro covers the airport, the city center and Piraeus port.
Flying from Georgia, Aegean Airlines, Wizz Air, Pegasus and SCAT connect Tbilisi (TBS) and Kutaisi (KUT) to Athens (ATH) and Thessaloniki (SKG), most often via Istanbul, Warsaw or direct seasonal Wizz Air rotations from Kutaisi, with Aegean Airlines occasionally running summer-only direct Tbilisi to Athens flights. Flight time Tbilisi to Athens is about 3h direct or 5 to 7 hours with one stop. Round-trip fares from Georgia typically run 450 to 1,200 GEL outside the August peak, with the cheapest fares appearing on the Kutaisi to Athens Wizz Air route when it operates. Greek Easter, which usually falls one to five weeks after the Catholic and Georgian Easter, pushes ferry and hotel prices upward and shuts most museums for the long weekend, so check the Greek Orthodox calendar before locking in travel dates.
