Poland
О стране Poland
Poland is the largest Central European country between the Baltic Sea and the Carpathian Mountains, and for Georgian travelers it functions as both a destination and a transit hub. Warsaw Chopin and Warsaw Modlin airports anchor the Wizz Air and LOT networks that connect Tbilisi and Kutaisi to most of Western Europe, so many Georgians pass through Warsaw on every trip to London, Paris or Madrid even when Poland is not the goal. The country itself runs from the medieval merchant cities of the north to the Tatra mountains in the south, with strong food, beer and vodka culture and prices still well below the Western European average.
Warsaw and Krakow are the two main stops. Warsaw, fully rebuilt after World War II, holds the UNESCO-listed Old Town with its rebuilt market square, the Royal Castle, the Warsaw Uprising Museum, the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Palace of Culture and Science. Krakow, untouched by wartime destruction, holds the largest medieval market square in Europe, Wawel Castle and Cathedral, the Kazimierz Jewish Quarter and the Wieliczka Salt Mine just outside the city. From Krakow, Auschwitz-Birkenau is a 90-minute drive west and the Tatra mountains around Zakopane are 2 hours south. Gdansk on the Baltic, Wroclaw with its dwarves and 12 islands, and Poznan with its market square round out the typical itinerary.
The best windows are May to September. June through August are the warmest and the season for the Baltic coast, December covers Krakow and Wroclaw Christmas markets, and January to March brings ski tourism around Zakopane. November is dark, damp and cheap.
The currency is the Polish zloty (PLN), not the euro, even though Poland is in the EU. Card payment is near-universal in cities, contactless works on most public transit, and ATMs accept Georgian Liberty and BOG cards. Polish is the language and English is good with the under-40 generation, less so in smaller towns. Trains run on PKP Intercity, with the EIP express connecting Warsaw to Krakow, Gdansk and Poznan in 2 to 3 hours.
Flying from Georgia, Wizz Air and LOT operate Tbilisi (TBS) and Kutaisi (KUT) to Warsaw (WAW and WMI) and Krakow (KRK), with direct rotations several times per week. Flight time Tbilisi to Warsaw is around 3h 30m and Kutaisi to Warsaw on Wizz Air is around 4h direct. Round-trip fares from Georgia typically run 350 to 1,100 GEL, with the cheapest tickets on the Wizz Air Kutaisi to Warsaw Chopin route in shoulder season.
